1.1 ArcGIS Modules
A)   ArcMap
    • ArcMap is the primary ArcGIS application for displaying, querying, editing, creating, and analyzing data.
        • Displaying and viewing Spatial data in ArcMap
        • Work with maps

        • Compile and edit GIS datasets
        • Use geo-processing to automate work and perform analysis
        • Organize and manage your geodatabases and ArcGIS documents

B)    ArcCatalog is used to:

    • Manage standards-based metadata
1.2  Open Arcmap 
1. Start è , all programs è  ArcGIS è  ArcMapl0.l (if you have a short cut for ArcMap 

There are a number of ways to open a map in ArcMap. You can:
·         Double-click on a map document to open it.
·         Select it in the ArcMap Getting Started dialog box.
·         Click the Open button on the Standard toolbar.
2. The ArcMap startup dialog appears è ‘click on ‘A new empty blank / blank map, OK. or close the upper dialog box click. An empty ArcMap window appears
1.3 Opening another map from an ArcMap session
If you are already working in ArcMap, you can choose to open another map document. This will close your existing map and open the new one in its place. There are three ways to change your map to another one:
    • Click the Open button  on the Standard toolbar (or use the shortcut CTRL+O).
    • Double-click on a map document in the Catalog window.
    • Use the Search window to find a map and double-click to open it in ArcMap.
Be sure to save your work in your existing map as it will be closed when the new map is opened.
1.4 Setting map document properties
The Map Document Properties dialog box contains fields and options that help you make your map document more usable. This dialog box also displays times when the document was last saved, last printed, or last exported.
You can access this dialog box in two ways.
·         From ArcMap, click File è  Map Document Properties. Or
·         From ArcCatalog or the Catalog window, right-click the map document in the tree view and click Properties.
·         Keep table of content visible
1.5 Adding data in to Arc map
Each layer references a dataset that is stored in a geodatabase, coverage, shapefile, raster, and so on. There are different ways of accessing commands in Arcmap:
·         select a dataset and drag it from the Catalog or
·         Search window onto your map or
·         add a dataset using the Add Data button.
a)      Adding data using the Menu bar, Toolbar and short cuts.
o   Click “Add data” button on the ArcMap toolbar to add data
o   Click the Look in dropdown arrow and navigate to the folder  <<1 training DU>>  Containing your layer file.
o   Click the layer file  << gedeo>>
o   Click Add.

1.7  Toggle the layer display on and off.
·         Look under table of content  the layers are there
·         Make the display off from top to bottom
1.6 Moving a layer to change its drawing order
                                           I.            In the table of contents, click the layer
                                        II.            Drag the layer up or down. A black bar indicates where the layer will be placed.
                                     III.            This bar indents to reflect the position in the layer hierarchy where the drop will occur.
                                     IV.            Release the mouse pointer to drop the layer in its new position.

1.7 Removing layer
Removing single layer
·         Right click on the layer name in the table of content
·         Select remove
to Removing several layers
1.      In the table of contents, click the first layer you want to remove.
2.      Hold down the Shift or Ctrl key and click to select additional layers.
3.      Right-click the selection and click Remove.
